After taking office, he surveyed the geographical situation and changed the Shajiao and Dajiao batteries at Humenkou to the letter battery; on the front line of Shangheng Island, he rebuilt the Nanshan battery (renamed Weiyuan), rebuilt the rung and Zhenyuan battery, added Yong'an, consolidated the battery, and controlled the east and west waterways; at the bottom of Humen, rebuilt the Dahushan battery. Another 40 cannons of more than 3,000 kilograms were cast and installed in each battery. At the same time, training was stepped up and regulations for spring and autumn exercises were formulated. In 1838, Jingyuan battery was added between Zhenyuan and Weiyuan batteries, Western copper cannons were installed for the first time, and two row chains were erected in the waterway on the east side of the rung. In 1839, Lin Zexu, the imperial imperial envoy, went to Guangdong to stop smoking, assisted in the capture of tobacco dealers, confiscated opium, and commanded the navy to exchange fire with British ships many times. In 1840, the Opium War broke out, and the imperial envoy, Qi Shan, went to Guangdong, insisting on peace and lax in defense. On January 7, 1841, the British launched the Battle of Humen in an attempt to force Qi Shan to submit by force. More than 10 ships were dispatched to capture Shajiao and Big Horn Fortresses. On February 26, the British army launched another 10 warships and 3 steamships, accompanied by landing troops, and stormed the first line of Henggou Island. 6 batteries. Guan Tianpei resisted stubbornly at Jingyuan Fortress Superintendent, and bombarded the enemy with cannons, causing him to be wounded and martyred.
