Thirty-six years ago today, on September 16, 1989 (August 17, 1989 lunar calendar), the Dunhuang Crescent Moon Spring reappeared. On September 16, 1989, after two years of restoration, the famous Dunhuang Crescent Moon Spring has regained its former charming style. The Crescent Moon Spring is located 5 kilometers south of Dunhuang City. The spring is surrounded by sand dunes blown by quicksand. However, in the thousands of years recorded in history, the Crescent Moon Spring has never been buried by wind and sand, which can be called a must of nature. Its peculiar landscape has attracted countless tourists and writers throughout the ages, leaving behind the reputation of "the first spring in the world". During the "Cultural Revolution", the Crescent Moon Spring was artificially damaged, coupled with the changes of hydrological and natural factors, which made this famous landscape lose its former style. The first phase of the project was completed this time, with the main focus on dredging the spring. After restoration, the water surface of the Crescent Moon Spring was restored from 6.9 mu to 13.5 mu; the average water depth rose from 0.8 meters to 3.5 meters; the circumference of the spring was restored from 460 meters to 580 meters. As for the restoration of the ancient buildings by the Crescent Moon Spring, the second phase of the project will be completed.
