On this day, 129 years ago, on January 12, 1896 (November 28, 1895, the lunar calendar), Kang Youwei founded "Qiang Journal" in Shanghai. In 1884, the annihilation of the Beiyang Navy during the Sino-Japanese War of 1894 exposed the corruption and incompetence of the Manchu government and caused social shock. In particular, the intellectual community began to consider reforms to strengthen the country, and various political groups began to emerge. In the autumn of 1895, Kang Youwei joined the Beijing Qiang Society and returned to Shanghai. With the assistance of Reform Party members Huang Zunxian and Chen Lisan, he established the Shanghai Branch of the Qiang Society. In order to attract colleagues and advocate reform ideas, Qiang Journal was founded. "Qiang Journal" is edited by Kang Youwei students Xu Qin and He Shuling, printed by Shanghai Qiang Society Bookstore, and is free to the public. This move is quite distinctive and changes the previous commercial motivation of running newspapers for profit-making. Its newspaper running policy is also very innovative: it specially compiles the emergency situation and urgently needed work in China at that time, and translates some foreign news, recording everything related to academia and governance, no matter how big or small. A series of publicity and activities by Qiang Journal and Qiang Society aroused hatred among conservatives and petitioned the Qing government to investigate and punish them. Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Liangjiang, was originally one of the officials who secretly supported the Qiang Society by the Qing government. In order to avoid offending the Qing government, he ordered the ban of Qiang Journal.
