Mexican rebels win, President Díaz leaves office

Mexican President Porfirio Diaz

On May 25, 1911, President Porfirio Díaz officially left the highest office in Mexico.

Mexico's recent uprising subsided after just six months of fighting. On May 21, the Díaz regime signed a peace agreement with interim President Francisco I Madero. The agreement was signed at 10:35 p.m. under the dazzling headlights of a car on the steps of the Juarez customs office. The customs door was locked before this. In view of the expanding uprising led by Madro, Díaz began recruiting volunteers in April this year, but it was too late. On May 1, Díaz suffered the greatest loss, and the rebels captured Durango, the capital of the first state. Fifteen days later, Diaz signed his resignation. As the war was ups and downs, a 20,000-strong U.S. army and two naval fleets had been closely observing the movements of the rebels. Officers were ordered not to cross the border, but some Americans and foreigners still joined the rebels. Some of them also participated in the battle in Greater Casas. Some of them were killed, some were injured, and some were captured, but the authorities did not intervene. Not sharing in the final victory was Madro's assistant Pancho Vera. He was arrested in 1910 and later fled to Texas.

Key words: May 25, 1911, Diaz, Mexico, President
