On December 2, 1986, the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development and Environmental Protection and the National Bureau of Statistics released the results of the first national urban housing census. Statistics show that the total housing construction area within the urban census scope of 28 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government of my country has 4.676 billion square meters, of which 323 cities (excluding municipal counties) have 2.833 billion square meters of houses, accounting for 60%. The living level of urban residents is slightly lower than that of counties and towns. This two-year national urban housing census has conducted a total of 28 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government since its inception in July 1984.(Census was suspended in Tibet Autonomous Region, but no census was taken in Taiwan Province). The housing conditions of 323 cities, 1951 counties (banners), 5270 towns and industrial and mining areas and the housing conditions of 150 million people (urban population) were surveyed, measured and registered one by one, and 1.55 billion pieces of raw data were obtained, basically clarifying the housing conditions of my country's cities and residents 'living standards. There are a total of 39.77 million households within the scope of this census, with a residential area of 1.509 billion square meters; The living area is 956 million square meters, the average household is 24.04 square meters, and the average person is 6.36 square meters. Among the existing types of houses, 91% were newly built after the founding of New China. Especially after the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, more than 3.2 billion square meters of houses were built, accounting for 68.61% of the total. At present, there are still many old and simple houses in cities and towns; the proportion of various houses is not balanced enough and is not compatible with the development of the commodity economy and the living needs of urban residents; there is still a considerable proportion of households lacking housing in cities and towns, and many houses are of poor quality, poor environment and poor equipment.
