At first, Jurchen did not have the characters of her own ethnic group, and first used the Khitan characters. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, in order to facilitate the implementation of the executive order, in 1119 (the third year of Jin Tianfu), the minister Wanyan Xiyin was appointed to make the Jurzhen characters. Xiyin made the Jurzhen characters with reference to Chinese characters and the Khitan characters, and later called them "Jurzhen big characters".

Later, Jin Xizong made new characters on February 12, 1138 AD (the first day of the first month of the first year of Jin Tianjuan), called "Jurchen Xiaozi."

It was officially promulgated and put into use in 1145 AD (fifth year of the Jin Dynasty).

Jurchen script was once used to translate Chinese classics, and it played a certain role in the improvement of Jurchen culture and the acceleration of feudalization of the Jurchen nationality.
