Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On 24 May 1941, HMS Hood was sunk by a German ship in the North Atlantic
On this day, 84 years ago, on May 24, 1941 (April 29, 1941, the HMS Hood was sunk by the German ship HMS Bismarck in the North Atlantic. The USS Hood was the largest and best warship in the world during World War II. It is also one of the most cherished and beautiful warships of the Royal Navy. The Hood was built on May 31, 1916. The Battle of Jutland broke out on the same day. Due to insufficient armor protection and ineffective fire prevention measures in the ammunition depot, the British Navy lost three battle-cruisers due to the explosion of the ammunition depot. After the Battle of Jutland, the HMS Hood postponed the start date. In response to the protection problems of battle-cruisers reflected in this naval battle, the British Navy improved its design plan and increased the thickness of its defensive armor. On September 1, 1916, the HMS Hood officially started construction, and three other ships of the same type also began construction. With the stagnation of the construction of the German battle-cruiser, the construction of three ships of the same type was suspended in March 1917, leaving only the HMS Hood, which had a faster construction progress, to continue construction. Construction work slowed down as the First World War drew to an end. Hood was launched in August 1918 and completed service on May 5, 1920. The Hood finished with a standard displacement of 41,200 tons, making it the world's largest main warship at the time. In the early days of the Second World War, after France was defeated and surrendered in 1940, in order to prevent the French fleet from being used by Germany, on July 3, the Hood as its flagship led the H Fleet stationed in the Mediterranean to shell and severely damage the French fleet at the military port of Mirskbir in Algeria. On May 24, 1941, the HMS Hood and the battleship Prince of Wales tracked and intercepted the German battleship HMS Bismarck in the Danish Strait. They were hit by German shells, causing an explosion in the rear main gun ammunition depot. The hull broke and quickly sank. Only three of the ship's more than a thousand officers and soldiers survived. HMS Hood became the last battle-cruiser built by Britain.
