On this day, 100 years ago, on January 6, 1925 (December 12, 1924 in the lunar calendar), Mussolini reshuffled his cabinet and was composed entirely of fascists. Mussolini had to put on a cold face even to an obedient cabinet. Mussolini had firmly grasped power after his landslide victory in the Italian elections the previous year, but he still felt the need to strengthen his position, so he embarked on a plan to promote friends and punish enemies. He used deprivation of public office to crack down on political opponents and remove opponents from government and other influential and prestigious positions. Police forces were ordered to carry out mass arrests, demolish houses and conduct indiscriminate searches. In short, Mussolini banned the Masons. The most effective thing was the way Mussolini (himself a former journalist and newspaper editor) dealt with the Italian press.
