On this day, 119 years ago, on January 13, 1906 (December 19, 1905 in the lunar calendar), Zhou Youguang, the father of Chinese Pinyin, was born. Zhou Youguang (born January 13, 1906), originally known as Zhou Yaoping, was originally his pseudonym at first, and "Youguang" later became his nickname. Born in Changzhou, Jiangsu, China, he is a famous linguist, philologist and economist in China. He is fluent in Chinese, English, French and Japanese. Zhou Youguang was mainly engaged in economics and finance during his youth and middle age. He served as a professor of economics at Fudan University. In 1955, his academic direction changed and he began to engage in language research full-time. He participated in and presided over the formulation of the "Chinese Pinyin Plan"(announced in 1958). He has been committed to language reform in the mainland of China for decades. Writer Shen Congwen is his brother-in-law. Zhou Youguang's life was full of legends. He specialized in economics in his early years. He studied in Japan and worked in the United States. He was one of the few China people who had interviewed Einstein. After liberation, he returned to Shanghai to serve as a professor of economics at Fudan University. In 1955, he was ordered to change to the field of character reform and participated in the design of the "Chinese Pinyin Plan". He is known as one of the founders of Chinese Pinyin.
