125 years ago today, on July 12, 1900 (June 16, 1900 lunar calendar), the Tibetan Scripture Cave was discovered in the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. On July 12, 1900 (June 16, the 26th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty), Wang Yuanzhuan, the head Taoist living in the Mogao Grottoes, accidentally discovered 50,000 scriptures, documents and paintings from the Western Jin Dynasty to the Northern Song Dynasty in the cave on No. 16. It was sealed in the cave around the middle of the Northern Dynasty to avoid chaos. This cave is called the Tibetan Scripture Cave. The discovery of Tibetan scripture cave relics did not attract the attention of the Qing Dynasty, but the imperialist cultural robbers took advantage of the ignorance and greed of Wang Daoist to plunder. In the name of archaeology, Stein of the United Kingdom spent 500 taels of silver and spent 7 days in the cave to select nearly 10,000 manuscripts and printed papers, filling 24 large boxes, including more than 1 foot long Tang embroidery Guanyin and our country's earliest extant engraved print "Diamond Sutra", and also selected 5 boxes of exquisite paintings and artworks, which were shipped back to the UK and collected in the British Museum in London. The Frenchman Boshihe learned that he also stole more than 5,000 treasures at the cost of 50 taels of silver a bundle. The American Walner used a special chemical solvent to strip away 26 square murals in 7 holes. In 1909, the Qing Dynasty ordered that all the remaining cultural relics in the scripture cave be shipped to Beijing, leaving only 8697 pieces, which were stored in the Beijing Library.
