On this day 64 years ago, on August 12, 1961 (July 2, 1961 in the lunar calendar), the British released Kenyan nationalist Kenyatta. Jomo-Kenyatta Following the Lancaster House meeting on Kenya's future in January 1960, black people in Kenya and elsewhere demanded the release of the leader of the Kenya African National Union, Jomo-Kenyatta. Kenyatta was sentenced to seven years of hard labor in 1953 for participating in the "Mau Mau Movement", but was still not allowed to return to Nairobi after serving his sentence.
