Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On May 21, 1949, the Chinese Communist Party and the British side negotiated over the "Amethyst" incident
Seventy-six years ago today, on May 21, 1949 (April 24, 1949), the Communist Party of China negotiated with the British side over the "Purple Quartz" incident. The wounded British warship "Purple Quartz" was forced to stop on the river near Zhenjiang. On April 21, 1949, the British warship Purple Quartz entered the river of the Chinese People's Liberation Army's Battle of Crossing the River without permission and was wounded by our artillery. After the incident, the British Far East Fleet sent the "London" and other three warships to provoke our position, and they were all repelled by our artillery, but both sides caused more than 200 casualties and injured the deputy commander of the British Far East Fleet. The British ship Yangtze River incident shocked the world. British Prime Minister Attlee said that "British warships have the legal right to enter the Yangtze River to carry out peaceful missions." Former Prime Minister Churchill even threatened to send an aircraft carrier to retaliate. Opposition leader Macmillan pointed out that the right of British warships to enter China's inland rivers had been revoked by the Chinese government in 1943. MP Gallage asked: If a pro-Hitler state warship broke into the English Channel on the day of our attack (D-Day), shouldn't we smash it to pieces? The British "Amethyst" ship has been stranded on the river east of Zhenjiang since it was wounded. On May 21, Kang Maozhao, a representative of the Communist Party of China, was ordered to write to the captain of the "Amethyst" ship, Major Krens, expressing the attitude of the People's Liberation Army's decision to solve the problem through negotiation, and asking the British side to appoint corresponding representatives to hold negotiations. The British side has never expressed its position on this, but has appointed the unrepresentative successor captain of "Amethyst", Major Krens, to contact and negotiate with the Chinese side, and to pass back and forth the telegrams and letters between the British side and the Chinese side. The representatives of the Communist Party of China handed over a memorandum to Krens. The memorandum listed the situation that four British ships violated China's inland rivers and the positions of the People's Liberation Army by armed force, causing serious casualties and losses to the Communist Party of China, and demanded that the British warships admit their mistakes and apologize to the People's Liberation Army. After compensating the People's Liberation Army and the local people for the losses suffered, the Communist Party of China is ready to discuss the way to evacuate the British ship "Amethyst" The captain of the ship, Chris, sent a letter to the British side on May 31, still saying that the "Amethyst" was on a "peace mission" and was wounded by artillery, so "the British ships are not responsible for this incident."
