122 years ago today, August 21, 1903 (June 29, 1903 in the lunar calendar), two Americans drove across the continental United States. Driving the car from the Pacific to the Atlantic in 51 days "Thank God, it's finally over!" This was what two exhausted men said as they drove their F-Pike into Columbus Circle in New York on August 21, 1903. They set out from San Francisco, California, and spent two months and one day completing a driving trip across the Americas. As Packard's Tom Fitch and reporter M-C-Kalap reached the finish line, there was a roar from the waiting crowd and accompanying vehicles. Their actual driving time is 51 days, driving 80 miles a day. The car was named "Pacific" after having its wheels driven into the water of the Pacific Ocean. It was originally planned to drive the wheel into the Atlantic water of Coney Island, but the plan was cancelled due to weather conditions. The two drivers arrived in New York covered in mud. During a trip across the continental United States, the car had only one failure. A spring on the front of the car broke, but it was quickly replaced with a new one. In addition, a spare tire was used. Even so, there were two other spare tires on the car. Fitch said the interest expressed in cars by strangers who had never seen a car was well-intentioned but somewhat picky and laughable. He said two farmers in Nebraska had threatened them with guns if they didn't drive the car away.
