January 18, 1945 Churchill urged the Third Reich to surrender
Eighty years ago today, on January 18, 1945 (December 5, 1944 in the lunar calendar), Churchill urged the Third Reich to surrender. On January 18, 1945, Prime Minister Churchill said that unconditional surrender was no more terrible for Germany than continuing a hopeless war. In one of his speeches to the House of Representatives, Churchill also called on the Allies to unite in the pursuit of peace. He laughed at the idea that "unconditional surrender" would strengthen enemy resistance. "Unconditional surrender" was agreed upon by President Roosevelt and himself during a meeting in Casablanca. He also defended British troops 'involvement in Greece, saying that otherwise Greece would fall into the hands of a communist dictatorship.
