July 8, 1998 was a terrible day for Miss Qian, a 20-year-old university student in Shanghai. At 10 a.m., Miss Qian and her nephew entered the Sichuan North Road Store of Shanghai Watson's Commodity Co., Ltd. When she went out, the alarm at the entrance of the store sounded, and a female clerk immediately stepped forward to stop Miss Qian from leaving the store and forcibly took Miss Qian to the office in the underground mall. When the female clerk determined through a handheld electronic detector in the office that Miss Qian's left hip had a magnetic signal, she rudely ordered Miss Qian to take off her pants and check. Miss Qian shed tears of humiliation and was forced to unbutton her pants twice. This has happened more than once. In 1995, a similar bag search incident occurred at the Liuzhou Road branch in Shanghai, which almost caused the person involved to suffer a heart attack. The victim was finally compensated for mental damage of 10,000 yuan and medical expenses of 20,000 yuan. Unfortunately, Watson did not learn the lesson. Soon, the People's Court of Hongkou District, Shanghai City, issued a first-instance judgment on the case of Shanghai Watsons Commodity Co., Ltd. infringing the right of reputation, and ordered Watsons to compensate Miss Qian for mental damages of 250,000 yuan. 1998 was called China's "Year of Privacy." During this year, China people's awareness of privacy and human rights was stronger than ever. This case of the highest reputation compensation in China can be regarded as one of the landmark events.
