In his early years, he entered the Shanghai Academy of Traditional Chinese Painting and Art to study Western painting. In 1917, he entered the Kawabata Academy of Fine Arts in Tokyo, Japan. After returning to China, he served as a teacher at Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and a professor at Shanghai Xinhua Art College.
