He rejoined the Communist Party of China in September 1939 and went to Yan 'an in early 1940, where he served as director of the History Research Office of the Marxism-Leninism Institute, vice president and director of the History Research Office of the Academia Sinica. In the winter of 1945, he was appointed president of Northern University. In July 1947, he served as Vice President, Director of the Research Department and Director of the History Research Office of North China University. Editor-in-chief of "Compendium of the General History of China" and author of "Modern History of China"(Part 1) and "The Evolution of the History of Confucian Studies in China." After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as director of the China Institute of Modern History, China Academy of Sciences, vice president of the China Historical Society, and member of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences, China Academy of Sciences. He was elected as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a representative of the First and Second National People's Congresses, a member of the Standing Committee of the Third National People's Congress, and an alternate member of the Eighth Central Committee of the Communist Party of China) and a member of the Ninth Central Committee. He died of illness in Beijing on July 29, 1969. His works include "Concise Course on China History"(Volume 1),"On the Reasons for the Long-term Continuation of Feudal Society in China", etc.
