The Huaihai Campaign ended on January 10, 1949
On this day, 76 years ago, January 10, 1949 (December 12, 1948, the Huaihai Campaign ended. During the Huaihai Campaign, the People's Liberation Army commando soldiers crossed trenches, rushed into Nianzhuangwei, and the People's Liberation Army took prisoners. They withdrew from the Huaihai Campaign. The Huaihai Campaign was the second of the three decisive battles in the War of Liberation. After the Battle of Jinan, the Kuomintang "suppressed" Liu Zhi's group of 600,000 people in Xuzhou in an attempt to prevent the East China Field Army from going south to join the Central Plains Field Army near Xuzhou. In order to complete the task of "seizing Xuzhou in winter and spring" proposed by the Central Military Commission, the Front Committee of the East China Field Army decided to carry out the Huaihai Campaign. According to Mao Zedong's instructions, the first battle in the Huaihai Campaign should aim at annihilating Huang Botao's regiment. Later, Mao Zedong instructed the Central Plains Field Army to attack Zhengzhou and Kaifeng with its main force, and attack the Xu-Bengbu Line eastward to coordinate with the East China Field Army. In late October 1948, the Central Plains Field Army captured Zhengzhou and continued to advance eastward, creating a favorable situation for the Central Plains and East China armies to jointly fight. After the victory of the Liaoshen Campaign, the situation in China has undergone major changes. The People's Liberation Army has not only surpassed the enemy in quality, but also has an advantage in quantity. In order to prevent the Xuzhou Group from following the mistakes of the Northeast Wei Lihuang Group, Chiang Kai-shek ordered Liu Zhi to shrink his troops and strengthen the defense between Xuzhou and Bengbu, and at the same time transferred the Huang Wei Corps to Xuzhou. Based on the development of the national war situation and the changes in the situation on the Huaihai battlefield, the Central Military Commission and Mao Zedong resolutely decided to expand the scale of the campaign and gather 600,000 people from the two major field armies of the Central Plains and East China and local troops to work together in an effort to annihilate the Liu Zhi Group near Xuzhou and prevent it from fleeing south. The Central Military Commission decided that Liu Bocheng, Commander of the Central Plains Field Army, Chen Yi, Deputy Commander, Political Commissar Deng Xiaoping, Acting Commander of the East China Field Army, Acting Political Commissar Su Yu, and Deputy Political Commissar Tan Zhenlin, should form the Party's General Front Committee, with Deng Xiaoping as secretary to coordinate all matters on the front line of the Huaihai Campaign. The Huaihai Campaign was divided into three stages: the first stage (November 6 - 22, 1948) was to annihilate Huang Botao's Corps, capture Suxian County, isolate Xuzhou, and place the Liu Zhi Group in a state of siege and division. In the second stage (November 23-December 15, 1948), Huang Wei's regiment was annihilated, commander Huang Wei was captured, and Du Mingming's group was surrounded. The third stage (December 16, 1948-January 10, 1949) completely wiped out the Du Zhiming Group and captured Du Zhiming, and the Huaihai Campaign ended. The Huaihai Campaign lasted for 66 days. Our army suffered 133,000 casualties and wiped out 555,000 people from a strategic group of the Kuomintang army, including the 5th and 18th armies of Chiang Kai-shek's "five main forces". The vast area north of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River was liberated. The People's Liberation Army reached the north bank of the Yangtze River, putting Nanjing and Shanghai, the political and economic centers ruled by the Kuomintang, under direct threat from our army. During the Huaihai Campaign, the Huang Wei Corps of the Chiang Army used 800 military vehicles to build a defense line southeast of Shuangduiji in an attempt to stop the PLA's offensive. The Huang Wei Corps was completely destroyed by the PLA and used 800 military vehicles to build a defense line. The East China Field Army launched an attack on the enemy stronghold of Lulou, the captured deputy commander of the Xuzhou "Suppression General"
