On this day, 87 years ago, January 8, 1938 (December 7, 1937, the lunar calendar), Bethune led a medical team to assist China. Dr. Bethune performed surgery in the operating room of the "Model Hospital" at Songyankou, Wutai Mountain. On January 8, 1938, Bethune led a Canadian and American medical team via Hong Kong and flew to Wuhan. On the 20th, Zhou Enlai met with him. Bethune arrived in Yan 'an at the end of March. Bethune (1890-1939) was an internationalist fighter, a member of the Communist Party of Canada, and a famous thoracic surgeon. In 1936, when German, Italian and fascist armed forces interfered in the Spanish Revolution, he followed the Canadian Volunteer Army to the front line to serve the anti-fascist Spanish people. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War in China, in order to support the cause of China's people's liberation, he was sent by the Communist Parties of Canada and the United States to lead a medical team to the Jiefang District of China. Shortly after arriving in Yan 'an, he transferred to work in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Border Region. He is extremely responsible for his work, extremely enthusiastic about his comrades and the people, and serves the anti-Japanese military and civilians of China with superb medical skills. He also trains a large number of medical cadres, making outstanding contributions to the liberation of the China people. After being infected and poisoned by the rescued wounded, he died on November 12, 1939 in Wanxian County, Hebei Province.
