On October 12, 2001 (August 26, 2001 lunar calendar), significant progress was made in rice genome research. The Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State Planning Commission, and the Ministry of Science and Technology jointly announced in Beijing on October 12, 2001 that the "working framework map" and database of China's rice (indica) genome have been completed, and the data will be released for free global sharing. Wen Jiabao, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, sent a letter to the Chinese Academy of Sciences on behalf of the State Council, congratulating our country's scientists on completing this "major scientific and technological achievement of international leading level". In his congratulatory letter, Wen Jiabao said, "For the first time, our country has independently completed the'working framework map 'of the rice genome of great significance and economic value, marking that our country has entered the forefront of world genome research. This major scientific and technological achievement will greatly promote rice research and agricultural development worldwide. On behalf of the State Council, I would like to express my warm congratulations and high respect to the scientists and staff who have made outstanding contributions to this research." Wen Jiabao hopes that scientists will make persistent efforts to make greater contributions to the comprehensive completion of the "fine map" of the rice genome, to the progress of agricultural science and technology and the development of agricultural economy in our country, and to the cause of life science for the benefit of mankind. Chen Zhu, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced that the sequence analysis of the whole rice genome is the basis for studying the genetic variation, development and evolution of rice, especially the cultivation of high-yielding, high-quality and delicious varieties. Studying its genome will help to understand the genomes of wheat, corn and other gramineous crops. Undertaking and completing this world-class project is the Genome Bioinformatics Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the BGI Gene Research Center, and its main collaborators, the Institute of Genetics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Hybrid Rice Research Center. This work framework map and database take the Chinese hybrid rice "Indica Rice 9311" cultivated by Academician Yuan Longping as the research object. It is the first part of the Chinese hybrid rice genome and development plan launched in May 2000, and its "fine map" will be completed next year. According to the results of assembly and data analytics, the Chinese rice (Indica Rice) genome "work framework map" and database have an international leading position. Its completion marks that our country has become the second country in the world to have the ability to independently complete large-scale whole genome sequencing and assembly analysis.
