On January 21, 1917, China film director Cheng Yin was born. He successively created one-act dramas "The Countryside of Shanxi, Chahar and Hebei","Family","Tiger Leela","Praying for Rain","Between the Enemy and Me","Fight Well", and directed the dramas "Thunderstorm" and "The Miser", etc.
After 1945, he served as the Propaganda Section Chief of the Political Department of the Luliang Military Region in Jinzhong and the Political Department of the Second Column of the Northwest Field Army. In October 1947, he was transferred to the Northwest Film Study Team, and soon followed the team to study at the Northeast Film Studio and served as the director of the Northeast Film Studio. The first documentary "Northeast Nursing Home" was filmed in July 1948.
In early 1949, he wrote and directed the feature film "Return to Your Own Team", and participated in the first National Cultural Congress in that year. In that year, the Northeast Film Studio moved to Changchun and served as the director of the factory. In September, he adapted the screenplay "Iron Warrior" based on the opera "Steel Bones and Iron Ribs" and directed this film. The film Iron Warrior became famous for it. It won the Peace Prize of the 6th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 1951, and the first prize for excellent films from 1949 to 1955 of the Ministry of Culture in 1957. At the end of 1951, he went to Shanghai to direct the feature film "South Expedition and North War". In 1952, he served as the secretary-general of the Central Film Bureau. In the same year, the director's film "South Expedition and North War" was well received. In 1954, he served as the deputy head of the Chinese Film Internship Group and went to the After returning to China in 1956, he became a director of the Beijing Film Studio. He directed films such as "Thousands of Waters and Thousands of Mountains", "After the Armistice", "Female Pilot", and "Brother Ba's Story".
In 1981, the director's film "Xi'an Incident" showed a broad historical scene with a simple documentary style and a rigorous, condensed and steady directing technique. He combined the broad historical background with vivid character portrayal to reproduce the historical event "Xi'an Incident". He made a gratifying breakthrough in the shaping of some historical figures, fully demonstrating his directing skills. In 1981, he led a Chinese film delegation to visit the United States. Chengyin's film "Xi'an Incident" won the Best Director Award at the Second China Film Golden Rooster Award in 1982 and the Outstanding Film Award of the Ministry of Culture in 1981. In 1982, he served as the president of the Beijing Film Academy. He died of illness in April 1984.
