On August 7, 2002 (June 29, 2002 in the lunar calendar), five members of the Shanying Society Mountaineering Team of Peking University were unfortunately killed. On August 7, 2002, while the Shanying Society mountaineering team of Peking University was climbing Xishabangma Peak in Xizang, five members of the mountain, Lei Yu, Lin Liqing, Yang Lei, Lu Zhen, and Zhang Xingbai, unfortunately encountered an avalanche, killing two people and missing three people. Peking University held a memorial service on the afternoon of August 26 to grieve and remember the five members of the Peking University Shanying Society mountaineering team who died, and posthumously awarded the titles of "Mountaineering Warriors" and "Model Soldiers of the Communist Youth League" to these five members.
