On September 10, 1980, the Third Session of the Fifth National People's Congress passed the new "Marriage Law of the People's Republic of China", which came into force on January 1, 1981. On April 28, 2001, the 21st Session of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress passed amendments to the "Marriage Law of the People's Republic of China", and the newly revised Marriage Law came into force on the same day.
