Twenty-seven years ago today, on May 29, 1998 (May 4, 1998), our country's largest anti-drug exhibition opened in Beijing. The largest exhibition since the founding of the People's Republic of China, "Cherish Life, Reject Drugs", opened one day at the Beijing Military Museum after months of preparation. Two months later, it will tour some provinces and cities across the country. According to surveys, at least 100,000 people die from drug use every year around the world, and 10 million people lose their ability to work as a result. What is even more shocking is that, despite the great harm of drugs, the drug trade has remained high for several years, with more than 400 billion US dollars, equivalent to more than 8% of the world's total trade. It is second only to the arms trade and exceeds the trade in steel and automobiles. In our country, the number of registered drug addicts in the special project struggle in 1997 was 540,000, of which 80% were teenagers. According to relevant parties, the actual number of drug addicts far exceeds this figure. Today, the phenomenon of drug abuse has spread to more than 1,920 counties and cities across the country, of which 720 are drug-using counties and cities with more than 100 people. According to incomplete statistics, in 1997, the national public security organs cracked 180,000 cases of drug violations and crimes, more than double the number in 1996. 244,000 drug dealers were arrested, nearly twice as many as a year ago. Compulsory drug rehabilitation 180,000, more than 50,000 more than in 1996. At present, there are 695 drug rehabilitation centers and 77,000 drug rehabilitation hospitals across the country. From the international environment, the "Golden Triangle" drug production is still increasing, the annual output of opium has reached more than 2,500 tons, and from the traditional cultivation of opium, heroin production and trafficking to the establishment of "ice" drug processing plants at the same time. China is the main producer of natural ephedrine, in recent years, the number of cases of overseas criminals processing and manufacturing "ice" in our country is also increasing. Experts predict that due to the simple manufacture of "ice" drugs, high profits, it is likely to become the main drug in the 21st century. In November 1990, our country established a national anti-drug committee composed of 18 ministries and commissions to lead the national anti-drug work. China was one of the first countries to sign and ratify the 1988 United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. In December 1990, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed the Decision on Drug Control. Faced with the increasingly severe situation of drug abuse, China is taking firm measures to stop the continued development of this phenomenon.
