Breaking-News >> TodayHistory February 23, 1918 Soviet Red Army Day
107 years ago today, February 23, 1918 (January 13, 1918 lunar calendar), the Soviet Red Army Day. 1918 was the most critical year for the Soviet regime after the victory of the October Revolution. Germany tore up the peace treaty and launched a full-scale attack on the Soviet Union on February 18. Soon occupied many cities such as Delysk, Polotsk, Orsha, Minsk, Pskov, and advanced towards the capital Petrograd. In the midst of this extreme crisis, on February 22, the Soviet government issued a message to the people, calling on "the sacred duty of the Russian workers and peasants to... defend the Soviet Republic against the bandits of bourgeois imperialist Germany." The workers, peasants, and demobilized soldiers answered this call, and they flocked to the Red Army Volunteer Registration Office, formed groups of Red Army volunteers, and immediately went to the front line to participate in the front line of battle. On February 23, mass meetings were held in Petrograd, the capital of Soviet Russia, and in other cities. While the masses of the people continued to register for the Red Army, the front line received good news of the Red Army's repulsion of the German onslaught near Pskov and Narva, and the enemy's advance towards Petrograd was stopped. The crowd was excited. To commemorate this day, Soviet Russia recorded this day in the annals of the Soviet Union as "Red Army Day".
