On December 11, 1931, the British passed the Westminster Act
On 94 years ago today, on December 11, 1931 (November 3, 1931 in the lunar calendar), the British passed the Westminster Act. On December 11, 1931, the British Parliament formally passed the Balfour Declaration and became the Westminster Act. After the First World War, Britain's power weakened and the centrifugal force of the Dominions strengthened. The laws governing Britain's relations with the Dominions no longer adapted to the needs of reality. In June 1925, the Baldwin government revised the method of communication between the Dominion and the United Kingdom, that is, communication no longer through the Colonial Ministry, but through the dedicated Dominion Ministry. From October 19 to November 18, 1926, the Imperial Conference in London adopted a series of resolutions, known as the "Balfour Declaration", declaring that the United Kingdom and the self-governing territories are autonomous communities within the British Empire, with equal status, and are not subordinate to each other in all aspects of their internal and foreign affairs, and share loyalty to the British King. In the British Commonwealth, they are voluntarily allied members. The Balfour Declaration was passed by Parliament on December 11, 1931 and became the Westminster Act, formally establishing the relationship between Britain and the dominions. The Dominion of the United Kingdom-Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Ireland are all free and equal countries within the Commonwealth. Together with the United Kingdom, they form the Commonwealth and share the British King as head of state. Each Dominion Parliament is equal to the Imperial Parliament, and no law of the British Parliament applies to the Dominion without its recognition. The Dominion can amend and repeal any bill passed by the Imperial Parliament in the past, and any law promulgated by the Dominion does not need to be approved by the British Parliament; each Dominion is autonomous in domestic and foreign affairs. The Westminster Act stipulates that the British Commonwealth is a loose union of free and equal countries, affirms the independent status of each dominion and their equal rights to establish sovereignty with the suzerain-state, and becomes the legal basis of the modern British Commonwealth. It is called the Magna Carta of the British Commonwealth.
