In 1957, at the age of 20, he came back from Hong Kong and studied at the Guangzhou Institute of Physical Education. In 1958, he participated in the National Table Tennis Championships, won the men's singles championship, and won the title of Athlete. In 1959, at the 25th World Table Tennis Championships held in Germany, he won the first world men's singles championship for the Chinese team. In 1961, at the 26th World Table Tennis Championships, he cooperated with his teammates to defeat the Japanese team and won the first world men's table tennis team championship for the Chinese team. In 1965, at the 28th World Table Tennis Championships, as the head coach of the Chinese women's table tennis team, he led the Chinese women's team to win the world women's table tennis team championship for the first time. In 1959 and 1961, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for Sports by the National Sports Commission twice. In 1984, he was named one of the outstanding athletes in the thirty-five years since the founding of the People's Republic of China.
