Twenty-eight years ago today, on November 4, 1997 (October 5, 1997 in the lunar calendar), Kunming was executed by lethal injection. On the morning of November 4, 1997, four criminals died quietly after being injected with anesthesia and lethal drugs. According to the news from the execution ground, they died in 32 seconds, 35 seconds, 40 seconds and 58 seconds respectively. This marks the success of the new method of execution of the Kunming Intermediate People's Court. The Kunming Intermediate Court is the first judicial institution in the country to use lethal injection to execute the death penalty. Its bold attempt has attracted widespread attention at home and abroad. According to the spokesperson of the court, Article 212 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Law stipulates: "The death penalty shall be carried out by shooting or lethal injection." From May 1996, the hospital began to study the method of execution by lethal injection. The research group and the experimental group reviewed a large number of relevant materials and demonstrated the feasibility of this method; after repeated comparisons, the lethal method of highly toxic drugs was ruled out, and anesthesia and lethal drugs were decided to be used. Then thousands of tests were carried out on animals, and finally a stereotyped formula was formed, which is characterized by non-highly toxic lethal, a short time to enter clinical death after injection, and no physiological painful reaction. The Kunming Intermediate Court held that the use of injection methods for death row prisoners is more in line with the humane spirit of modern society, reflecting the progress of social legal system and civilization. At the same time, from the perspective of human and material resources expenditure and the choice of execution grounds, the one-time success rate of execution, etc., the injection method is more advanced. It is reported that there are currently 99 countries in the world that retain the death penalty. The methods of execution include hanging, electrocution, poison gas, beheading, shooting and lethal injection, while only the United States and China use lethal injection. The Supreme People's Court praised the practice of the Kunming Intermediate Court. In order to further standardize the steps and procedures of lethal injection execution, the Kunming Intermediate Court has been equipped with the necessary equipment for lethal injection execution, and has begun to build fixed execution places to make lethal injection methods more standardized, more effective and more civilized.
