On October 26, 2019 (September 28, 2019 in the lunar calendar), Pan Handian, a famous jurist and professor at China University of Political Science and Law, passed away at the age of 98. Pan Handian, professor and distinguished doctoral supervisor of the School of Comparative Law of China University of Political Science and Law, consultant of the Comparative Law Research Society of China Law Society, honorary president of the Comparative Law Research Society of Beijing City Law Society, and famous jurist, passed away at 5:41 a.m. on October 26, 2019 due to illness. He was 98 years old. Professor Pan Handian's life Pan Handian, known as Zong Xun, was born in 1920 in Shan Tou City, Guangdong Province. His grandfather Pan Wenduo was awarded a Jinshi as a translator (the translation subject was one of the imperial examinations subjects of the Qing Dynasty) and was an official of the fifth grade. His father Pan Chengxiu graduated from Guangdong Law and Politics School in the late Qing Dynasty and later became a famous local lawyer. He was elected president of the Shan Tou City Lawyers Association. His family background influenced Pan Handian's lifelong legal career. Pan Handian has been a professor at Guanghua University in Shanghai since 1948 (later appointed as an associate professor). He has successively moved to Guanghua University in Shanghai, Soochow University, Peking University, Beijing University of Political Science and Law, China Political and Legal Society, Institute of Law of China Academy of Social Sciences and China University of Political Science and Law, and has been engaged in legal education and research for more than 70 years. Starting from Pan Handian's award-winning thesis "A Preliminary Study of Ancient Legal Thought in China" in 1943, Pan Handian's academic activities have lasted for 76 years. Pan Handian is a low-key person and rarely talks about himself. However, his legal path in his life was extremely rich: many works bear witness to the footsteps of legal science in modern China. Influenced by his father, who was a lawyer, Pan Handian University studied at Soochow University Law School in Shanghai. Also because of the war, when Pan Handian entered Dongwu Law School, the school was forced to move four times: Muertang-Cishu Building-China Vocational Education-Xinhuan Middle School-Patriotic Women's Middle School. His disciple Bai Sheng clearly remembers that around 2012, Mr. Pan once met with students after class at Xueyuan Road Campus and accidentally recalled his difficult experience in studying during the Anti-Japanese War: In 1942, Pan Handian, who was a sophomore in college, learned that his mother died of illness in Hong Kong. Due to the obstruction of the war, they were not even able to attend the funeral. His mother "continued his studies", but he could only study hard with sorrow. His studies have always been among the top three in the grade, and he mastered English, French, German and Japanese. Speaking of emotions, the old man couldn't help but shed tears. No matter which unit he worked for, he never stopped academic research. For research needs, Pan Handian also self-taught Russian and Italian. He spent 27 years using 4 Italian texts, referred to 13 versions of "The Prince" published in Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Japan and other countries, and consulted 17 works on Machiavelli's thoughts and life. In 1985, he published a more detailed and accurate translation of "The Prince". He was also awarded the "Translation Culture Lifelong Achievement Award" by China Translators Association in 2012. Pan Handian is recognized as one of the founders of contemporary China comparative law. Regarding the origin of comparative law in China, it is missing in the famous comparative law works in Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Japan and other countries. Pan Handian clearly stated that "Fa Jing" is not only the first relatively systematic written code in my country's history, but also a great achievement in the origin of comparative law in the world. In terms of the social effects produced at that time and its subsequent far-reaching influence on the history of China's legal system, it is no less inferior to the origin of comparative law in Eastern and Western countries. Together with the earlier Hammurabi Code, it can be called the double stones on the origin of Eastern comparative law. Pan Handian also wrote several papers in consultation with the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and the Supreme People's Court, and also provided his own contribution to the concept of "asylum" in the current Constitution. When he was nearly eighty years old, he also accepted an invitation to serve as the chief editor of the Yuanzhao Dictionary of Anglo-American Law. He traveled to Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Hefei and other places many times with the editor-in-chief and dictionary staff to find and invite seniors from the Dongwu Law School to join him. Later, he contacted Anglo-American Law and Roman Law experts familiar with Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United States, Canada and other places. After many hardships, he published the prestigious "Yuanzhao Dictionary of Anglo-American Law" in 2003. This is Ni Zhengzhen, Yao Qixing, Lu Jun, Yang Tieliang, Cai Jin, Xu Zhisen and Pan Handian and other Dongwu scholars jointly set a monument to China's jurisprudence. Mr. Pan Handian has continued to write and always persisted in research, making great contributions to the academic community. In October 2019, Mr. Pan Handian's translated book "On the Struggle for Rights", which he studied for more than 70 years, was officially published by the Commercial Press, and the "Pan Handian Academic Collection" will also be published within the year. As Mr. Pan said that he was "a diligent scholar", between books, in every rise and fall of the pen tip, what remains unchanged is the scholar's heart of fighting to serve the country.
