On November 15, 1874, August Crowe, a professor at the Department of Animal Physiology at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and the winner of the 1920 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, was born.
In 1922, during a visit to the United States, Danish Nobel laureate August Krogh and his diabetic wife, Dr. Marie Krogh, learned that insulin had been discovered in Canada.
Marie persuaded August to travel to Toronto to meet with Professor MacLeod, who led the team of researchers who discovered insulin. After the meeting, August and Marie returned to Copenhagen with a production license and a desire to produce insulin in northern Europe. In March 1923, a patient received Danish insulin for the first time.
In 1920, August Crowe was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the mechanism of microvascular regulation in skeletal muscle.
