On August 2, 1918, Johnston became Puyi's English teacher
107 years ago today, on August 2, 1918 (June 26, 1918 in the lunar calendar), Zhuang Shidun became Puyi's English teacher. Zhuang Shidun (first from left) was in the Imperial Garden with Pu Yi (second from left), Runqi (third from left), and Pu Jie (fourth from left). In early August 1918, the British Zhuang Shidun became Pu Yi's "imperial teacher" and taught English. Johnston is a British Scotsman. When he was studying at Oxford University, he specialized in Oriental classical literature and history. After graduation, he was first assigned to Hong Kong as the personal secretary of the British Governor, and then to Shandong as the chief executive of the Weihaiwei Colony. At first, he could only speak Cantonese, but after arriving at Weihaiwei, he learned to speak Beijing's official dialect. He had read many Buddhist interpretations and felt that Eastern Buddhist theories were more advanced than the Christian Bible, so he no longer worshiped in churches. He wrote a book called "The Becoming Buddha of All Living Things on Earth" and often corresponded with a priest in England, using Buddhist theories to refute the Bible. He had visited many famous mountains and ancient temples and discussed the secrets of interpretation from masters and eminent monks.
