During the Commune, he went to Paris in April 1871. In August, he fled to Spain. Actively participated in the struggle against Bakuninism within the First International. He later became one of the leaders of the French workers' movement, founded the French Workers' Party, and promoted Marxist ideas. He was imprisoned in 1883. He was a member of parliament from 1885 to 1894, but opposed socialist participation in bourgeois government.
