Eighty years ago today, on October 24, 1945 (September 19, 1945 lunar calendar), French collaborators Laivar and Quisling were executed. On October 24, 1945, two prominent war-time Nazi conspirators - Pierre Laivar of France and Vidkun Abraham Quisling of Norway - were executed for helping Germany occupy their country. Laivar was Chancellor of the Vichy government during the German invasion of France. He was executed by firing squad when he shouted "Long live France" with his last breath. Before that, he attempted suicide by swallowing a bottle of poison that had been hidden in his body for more than a year. Quisling was head of the Norwegian Senate during the five years of German occupation of Norway. A Norwegian court convicted him of treason. Mr. Quisling, 58, was found guilty of helping Germany invade Norway, defecting from the army and killing thousands of Norwegians, including 1,000 Jews deported to Germany, and accepting Nazi money.
