On this day 112 years ago, July 14, 1913 (June 11, 1913 in the lunar calendar), was the birthday of Gerald Ford, an American politician and president. Gerald Rudolph Ford (July 14, 1913 - December 26, 2006) 38th President of the United States (August 9, 1974 - January 20, 1977) American politician, 40th Vice President and 38th President of the United States. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where he was also a famous football star. He then went to Yale University to study law and served in the United States Navy in World War II. After the war, Ford became a staunch "internationalist". He defeated the then-incumbent party leader in the Republican Party and was elected to the House of Representatives representing the Grand Rapids area of Michigan. He was elected Minority Leader of the House of Representatives in 1963, and he remained in the House until 1973. At the height of the Watergate scandal, Ford was appointed Vice President after the resignation of then-Vice President Spiro Agnew (December 6, 1973 - August 9, 1974). Ford succeeded him as President of the United States after the resignation of Richard Nixon on August 9, 1974. He is the only person in American history to take over as Vice President and President without being elected. He and his Vice President Nelson Rockefeller are the only two unelected Vice Presidents in American history. During Ford's administration, the United States withdrew its troops from Vietnam, the Helsinki Agreement came into effect, domestic inflation and economic depression in the United States. Due to the Democratic majority in the US Congress, the government was unable to pass important laws. Ford was forced to exhaust his veto power. Many people were also very unhappy with Ford's amnesty Nixon. In 1976, Democratic presidential candidate Jimmy Carter defeated Ford by a small margin. He ran for vice president in the administration of Ronald Reagan in 1980, but Reagan chose George H.W. Bush as his vice president. In 2003, he celebrated his 90th birthday and was the fourth former president of the United States to be over the age of 90. He died on December 26, 2006 at the age of 93.
