The Middle East Summit on October 2, 1996 failed to achieve a breakthrough
Twenty-nine years ago today, on October 2, 1996 (August 20, 1996 lunar calendar), there was no breakthrough in the Middle East summit. The four-nation summit did not make a major breakthrough. The Middle East summit was chaired by Clinton and attended by Palestinian President Arafat, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and King Hussein of Jordan. The Quartet summit was held urgently on October 1-2 after large-scale violence broke out between Palestine and Israel. On October 2, 1996, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Arafat concluded a two-day "emergency summit" in Washington. The meeting failed to resolve major differences between the Palestinians and Israelis, but the two sides expressed their willingness to take effective measures to stop all kinds of violence and make efforts to resume peace talks between Palestine and Israel and continue the difficult Middle East peace process. The first round of talks is scheduled to be held in Erez near Gaza on October 6, and the top priority is to resolve the issue of the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Hebron. After the meeting, US President Bill Clinton held a press conference at the White House as the host and host. Clinton admitted that the meeting failed to achieve a breakthrough and that "problems and differences still exist" between Palestine and Israel. But he said the meeting allowed the two sides to "reach an understanding" and "gain trust" at a "higher level" to resolve differences and achieve reconciliation.
