On February 15, 2000 (January 11, 2000 in the lunar calendar), Hu Changqing, former deputy governor of the People's Government of Jiangxi Province, was sentenced to death. Hu Changqing held a public hearing from February 13 to 14, 2000 to hear the case of Hu Changqing, former vice governor of Jiangxi Province, accepting bribes, and having a huge amount of property of unknown origin. On February 15, the Nanchang City Intermediate People's Court sentenced Hu Changqing to death in the first instance, deprived of political rights for life, confiscated property and recovered illegal income. On March 1, 2000, the Jiangxi Province Higher People's Court ruled to reject Hu Changqing's appeal, upheld the original sentence, and submitted it to the Supreme People's Court for review in accordance with the law. On March 8, 2000, Hu Changqing was executed in Nanchang. Hu Changqing was born in August 1948 and was elected deputy governor of Jiangxi Province in January 1998. From May 1995 to August 1999, while serving as deputy director of the Religious Affairs Bureau of the State Council, assistant to the governor and deputy governor of the Jiangxi Province People's Government, Hu Changqing accepted and requested money and goods from 18 people including Zhou Xuehua, president of Jiangxi Aote Car Rental Co., Ltd.(handled separately), Li Weidong, chairman of Jiangxi Jinyangguang Enterprise Group Co., Ltd.(handled separately), and Jiangxi Province Commercial Storage and Transportation Company 90 times, equivalent to a total of more than 5.44 million yuan. Among them, RMB 2.8 million, US$80,000, HK$940,000 and valuables worth more than RMB 970,000. Hu Changqing also used his position to seek benefits for the bribers on many occasions, causing huge property losses to the country. On December 22, 1999, with the approval of the Central Committee, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection expelled Hu Changqing from the party, and relevant departments have expelled him from public office. The Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and the Standing Committee of the Provincial People's Congress have removed their posts as members of the provincial government's leading group and deputy governor respectively.
