On this day, 37 years ago, on October 31, 1988 (September 21, 1988 in the lunar calendar), my country's first expressway, the Shanghai-Jiaxing Highway, was opened. The first expressway-Hujia Expressway On October 31, 1988, the mainland of China had its own expressway. The Shanghai-Jiaxing Expressway is the Shanghai-entering section of National Highway 204 (Shanghai to Yantai). From Qilian Mountain Road in Shanghai to the South Gate of Jiading County in the suburbs, it is a high-grade highway with a full interchange, fully enclosed equipment and fully dedicated vehicles. The highway has a total length of 20.5 kilometers, an area of 45 meters wide, a road surface of 26.5 meters wide, a 3.5-meter separation zone in the center, two lanes for up and down, and 2.5-meter-wide hard shoulders on both sides for emergency parking. For the first time, this highway has adopted modern traffic monitoring facilities, and three data collection systems have been set up across the line to collect data on speed, model and passing vehicles. Emergency phones are set up every kilometer to keep car drivers, highway managers and the central control room in touch. The highway is designed to be 120 kilometers per hour and can open to traffic day and night with more than 40,000 vehicles.
