On this day, 71 years ago, June 9, 1954 (May 9, 1954 in the lunar calendar), the Japanese Self-Defense Force was established. On June 9, 1954, the Japanese government promulgated the "Law on the Establishment of the Defense Agency" and the "Self-Defense Forces Law"(commonly known as the "Second Defense Law"), changing the Security Force into a Self-Defense Force with three armies, Army, Navy and Air Force. After the outbreak of the Korean War, the United States re-armed Japan. On July 8, 1950, it instructed the Yoshida cabinet to establish a national police reserve force of 75,000 people and increase the number of Coast Guard agencies by 8,000 people. According to the Japan-US Security Treaty of September 1951, in 1952, the Yoshida Cabinet established the Security Department, changed the Police Reserve Force to the Security Force, expanded the number of troops to 110,000, and established a new Maritime Guard Force. On June 9, 1954, in order to adapt to the changes in the U.S. Far East strategy, the Security Force was reorganized into the Ground Self-Defense Force, the Garrison Force was reorganized into the Maritime Self-Defense Force, and the Air Self-Defense Force was newly built. Its tasks are stipulated to maintain domestic security and defend against direct or indirect foreign aggression. The Self-Defense Forces are under the command and supervision of the Prime Minister of the Cabinet, and are managed and coordinated by the Defense Agency. The establishment quota is 270,000. The Self-Defense Force was Japan's regular military force after the war, and its total military expenditure ranked third in the world.
