On this day, 47 years ago, March 8, 1978 (January 30, 1978 in the lunar calendar), the first opening ceremony of the Junior Class of USTC was held. In 1978, the junior class of China University of Science and Technology welcomed the first phase of 21 students, and the unprecedented "child prodigy" educational practice in the history of China's education was officially launched. Thirty-five years later, when the 37th Junior Class was about to enter, the dean said,"Our students are not child prodigies." In the midst of controversy, the junior class of CUHK has gone through 35 years. At the beginning of its establishment, the Junior Class was praised as a "commando team on the knowledge wasteland." Thirty years later, in 2008, the Chinese University of Science and Technology released a set of survey data, saying that in the past 30 years, 31 junior classes had enrolled students, 1027 of whom graduated, 935 of whom were admitted to graduate school, accounting for 91%; about 20% of students chose academic research as a lifelong career after graduation. Xie Yanbo, the youngest "child prodigy", was only 11 years old when he entered college in 1978. He was still unable to take care of himself in life, and his experience in interacting with others was even more difficult to talk about. After entering school, he often played the game of "rolling the hoop" alone. Later, when he graduated and went abroad to study for a doctoral degree, he was unable to obtain a doctoral degree due to a tense relationship with his supervisor. After graduation, Ning Bo stayed in school to teach, but was never successful. In 2002, Ning Bo went to Wutai Mountain to become a monk, but was taken back by the school. A year later, he "successfully" escaped into the empty door. University of Science and Technology of China began to reflect on whether the training of "child prodigies" was a bit "encouraging". In order to avoid excessive praise for "child prodigies", in recent years, University of Science and Technology of China has promulgated a discipline that "students in the junior class focus on learning while at school and try not to accept interviews." The "child prodigies" entered school during an adolescent period full of physical and psychological contradictions. The particularity of the junior class stimulates their enthusiasm for learning and also promotes some irrational words and deeds. It is easy to feel depressed and jealous because of a temporary lag in learning, and it is also easy to feel excluded from others and the collective because of poor communication. For more than 30 years, there has been constant controversy over whether "child prodigies" such as Ning Bo and Xie Yanbo with extraordinary intelligence and immature mental development should be gathered together for "child prodigy education", but the junior class has not been interrupted. In 2009, the Junior Class of USTC developed from two classes to an independent Junior Class College. In 2009, 11-year-old Gong Min was admitted to the junior class with a college entrance examination score of 639 points, becoming a "college entrance examination prodigy" who "integrates all kinds of favors". Gong Min's family said that Gong Min will continue to pursue a master's and doctoral degree after completing his undergraduate studies.
