On this day, 72 years ago, October 25, 1953 (September 18, 1953 in the lunar calendar), the border between Yugoslavia and Italy was tense. After Tito's strongly worded speech, anti-Italian demonstrations broke out in Belgrade on October 25, 1953. The situation in Trieste became tense again as Yugoslavia accused Italy of being "obviously hypocritical". Italy has recommended that both countries withdraw their troops from the border. The conflict between the two sides occurred in 1945, when Marshal Tito's troops took back the former Italian port city and handed it over to Yugoslavia. The peace treaty signed by South Italy later stipulated that Trieste was an independent and neutral free zone and divided it into zones A and B. Area A is managed by the United States and the United Kingdom, and Area B is controlled by Yugoslavia. On October 8, the United States and Britain announced their decision to hand over Area A to Italian control. This proposal was rejected by the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.
