The Battle of the Coral Sea was the first encounter between the US and Japanese aircraft carrier formations in the Pacific Ocean. Both sides carried out long-range attacks with carrier aircraft, and never used naval guns to shoot each other. On May 7, 1942, the Japanese army went south to the Coral Sea in a mobile formation, dispatched 78 carrier aircraft to attack, and bombed 1 US destroyer. 93 US carrier-based aircraft attacked the Japanese landing fleet and direct cover team, and immediately sank the Japanese light aircraft carrier. Afterwards, the Japanese army was frustrated and stopped the attack. Both sides suffered losses in the naval battle. The Japanese lost 1 aircraft carrier and destroyer each, 3 small ships, 2 aircraft carriers were injured, 80 aircraft were lost, and 900 casualties; the US also sank aircraft carriers, destroyers, and oil tankers. 1 aircraft carrier was injured, 66 aircraft were lost, and 543 casualties.
