On February 6, 1978, China Central Radio and Television University officially opened. Central Radio and Television University is a new type of university directly under the Ministry of Education. It uses radio, television, written textbooks, audio-visual textbooks, computer courseware and the Internet and other media to carry out distance and open education across the country. In 1979, China Central Radio and Television University held its opening ceremony in Beijing. Since then, audio-visual education centers have been established in all provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government. Except for Xizang, which is preparing to build a radio and television university, all provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government across the country have established radio and television universities. In 1986, China Education Television was established and opened a satellite channel. Currently, it has three channels, one of which is dedicated to nine-year compulsory education. There are 10 provincial-level educational television stations, 104 prefecture-level stations, and tens of thousands of satellite ground receiving stations across the country. By the mid-1990s, it had formed the world's largest local network, with radio and satellite TV transmission as the main media online learning system. Over the past 20 years, using the online learning system of radio and television, we have provided continuing education and on-the-job training to teachers and principals in more than 2 million primary and secondary schools. Compared with 1986, the academic qualification rate of full-time primary school teachers in China increased from 62.8% to 93.1%. We also broadcast demonstration courses for outstanding teachers in primary and secondary schools and training courses for managers in primary and secondary schools. Radio and Television University has trained a total of 2.3138 million college graduates in the past 20 years. Since piloting the registration of audio-visual students in 1996, there are currently more than 260,000 students studying. Our radio and television school also provides practical rural technical training to tens of millions of farmers.
