On this day 47 years ago, on March 11, 1978 (February 3, 1978 lunar calendar), the State Council decided to build the Shanghai Baoshan Iron and Steel Plant. On March 11, 1978, the State Council agreed to the State Planning Commission, Construction Commission, Economic Commission, Shanghai Municipality and Metallurgical Ministry's "Request for Instructions on Site Selection, Construction Scale and Related Issues of Shanghai's New Iron and Steel Plant", and decided to import complete sets of equipment from Japan to build a new steel plant in Baoshan County, Shanghai. The plant area of Baoshan Iron and Steel Company covers an area of 11.11 square kilometers and consists of 5 main production plants such as coking, ironmaking, steelmaking, primary rolling, and steel pipes, as well as auxiliary facilities such as self-provided power plants, energy centers, water transportation terminals, and central machinery repairs. Construction began in December 1978 and was carried out in two phases. In September 1985, the first phase of the project was completed and put into operation, and all the projects were completed in 1991. In April 1998, Baosteel's No. 3 sintering and raw material related system engineering heat load test was successfully carried out, marking Baosteel as the largest sintering enterprise in China with the highest output and the highest degree of modernization. Baoshan Iron and Steel Group ranked 5th in the evaluation of China's 500 largest industrial enterprises in 1994.
