On August 8, 2010 (June 28, 2010 in the lunar calendar), a major mudslide occurred in Zhouqu County, Gansu Province. According to Gannan Prefecture Mao Shengwu, at ten o'clock last night, heavy rainfall occurred in the local area, and the county town suffered mudslides at around twelve o'clock. Debris flows rushed into the county and cut off the river to form a barrier lake. Preliminary estimates are that 50,000 people have been affected. The county seat of Zhouqu County is located in the middle of a canyon, with a total population of more than 40,000. Together with the surrounding population, there are about 50,000 people. The local government is actively conducting search and rescue for missing people. As of 16:00 on August 13, the Zhouqu mountain torrents and mudslides have killed 1156 people and left 588 missing.
