Anton Rubinstein (November 28, 1829-November 20, 1894) was a Russian pianist, composer and conductor. Anton Rubinstein was born into a Jewish family in Vikhvatinets (now part of the Transnistria Republic). He began to learn piano at a very young age and performed on stage for the first time at the age of 9. His teacher, Alexander Villoing, took him to Paris and performed in front of Chopin and Liszt. Later, he and his brother Nikolai Rubinstein were taken to Berlin by his mother to study composition and music theory with Siegfried Dehn, and were appreciated and supported by Mendelssohn and Giacomo Meyerbeer. He began touring as a pianist in the late 1850s and eventually settled in St. Petersburg.
