On this day, 40 years ago, October 1, 1985 (August 17, 1985 in the lunar calendar), Israeli aircraft attacked the PLO headquarters. On October 1, 1985, new victims emerged in the brutal and deadly cyclical war in the Middle East. Israeli aircraft flew 1500 miles to Tunisia, bombing the headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organization there. Sixty people were killed,"including women and children, many of whom were Tunisians." PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat was not there at the time of the bombing. "My people will retaliate against this official act of terror and the military junta that came to power after the Israeli coup," he vowed. Israeli officials said the offensive was in retaliation for last week's murder of three Israelis in Cyprus.
