Born in Guanghan, Sichuan Province in 1890 (16th year of Guangxu reign of Qing Dynasty). In 1905, he studied in Japan and participated in the China Alliance. After the Revolution of 1911, he participated in the founding of Minquan Newspaper in Shanghai and defected to Sun Yat-sen. In the early days of the May 4th Movement, he wrote articles in the Weekly Review to promote new ideological trends and labor movements. Later, he was busy with securities and stock trading, and jointly organized the "Hengtai" exchange with Chen Guofu and others to engage in speculative business. After Sun Yat-sen's death in 1925, he published articles such as "National Revolution and the Kuomintang of China" and "The Philosophical Foundation of Sun Wenism", opposing Sun Yat-sen's three major policies of uniting with Russia, uniting with the Communist Party, and supporting farmers and workers, as well as opposing class struggle and the worker-peasant movement, and was criticized by Qu Qiubai and others. After the April 12 coup in 1927, he served as a member of the Nanjing National Government and president of the Examination Institute, and served as Chiang Kai-shek's counselor for a long time. After the September 18th Incident, he served as chairman of the Special Diplomacy Committee (also known as the Special Committee on Japan Issues). He was one of the creators of the policy of "resisting foreign affairs must first stabilize the domestic affairs." At the end of 1948, the Nanjing National Government was on the verge of collapse and moved from Nanjing to Guangzhou; on February 11, 1949, he committed suicide by swallowing a large amount of eye medicine in Guangzhou in despair.
