On January 29, 2004 (January 8, 2004 in the lunar calendar), the "China Medical Group" won Thailand's highest medical award-the Prince Mahidol Award. On January 29, 2004, King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand awarded Thailand's highest medical award, the Prince Mahidol Award, to the China medical group that developed the anti-malaria drug artemisinin, in recognition of their contribution to the treatment of malaria.
