On August 12, 1908, the famous wheat breeding and cultivation scientist Mei Jifang was born
117 years ago today, on August 12, 1908 (July 16, 1908 in the lunar calendar), Mei Jifang, a famous wheat breeder and cultivator, was born. Mei Jifang, (1908-1983), a wheat cultivator and cultivator, was born on August 12, 1908 in Funing County, Jiangsu Province. His hometown is located in the coastal area of northern Jiangsu Province. It is a backcountry where "many reeds and rare people" are seen. The farming is extensive, the harvest is extensive, and the farmer's life is extremely difficult. Mei Jifang was influenced by the "May Fourth" movement in his youth, advocating science, determined to learn agriculture, and advocated scientific salvation of the country. In 1922, he was admitted to Nanjing No. 1 Agricultural School. In 1929, he entered the Agricultural College of Jinling University and stayed in the school as a teaching assistant and lecturer after graduating in 1934. In the summer of 1940, he studied for a master's degree. In 1942, he received a master's degree and still stayed on as an associate professor. In the summer of 1943, he went to Enshi, Hubei Province to be a professor at Hubei Agricultural College. In 1945, he went to Washington State University and Cornell University for research and internship. During his studies in the United States, he turned to wheat breeding research and had extensive contact with the leading wheat geneticists and breeders in the United States at that time, which broadened his thinking, expanded his horizons, and enhanced his confidence and strength to catch up with the international advanced level in this professional field. After Mei Jifang returned to China from the United States in 1946, he was faced with three job choices: one was to go to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry as an official, enjoying a simple appointment treatment, with a high salary and status; the second was to return to Jinling University as a professor and a high-ranking job; the third was to go to the Central Agricultural Experimental Institute as a technician and do research work, but he could only recommend him to a first-level treatment. Mei Jifang decisively chose to go to the Central Agricultural Experimental Institute to continue his wheat breeding research work in order to realize his ambition of scientific salvation of the country. However, due to the lack of funds and poor conditions in scientific research units during the Liberation War, it was difficult to dedicate his wisdom if he had the heart to serve the country. Mei Jifang dedicated her life to higher agricultural education and crop research, breeding early-maturing wheat varieties such as "East China No. 1", which were planted in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River; organizing wheat scab resistance breeding and applied basic research on early-maturing breeding and cultivation to meet the needs of restructuring.
