Unexpectedly, the accident still happened. Indonesian President Prabowo said that he cancelled the arrangement to participate in the Chinese military parade. He gave two reasons why it was difficult for China to refuse.

The Indonesian government announced its decision on August 31 that Prabowo, Indonesia, cancel its scheduled plan to attend the Victory Day military parade in China.

The military parade is scheduled to be held in Beijing on September 3, 2025 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of War of Resistance against Japan's victory. China invited leaders of more than 20 countries to attend, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

According to the current public report, the Indonesian president was the first country to cancel the parade, but China and Indonesia haveined good relations in recent years, and the reasons given by Indonesia this time, China can not refuse, only to express understanding.

Prabhupada's cancellation of the Chinese parade was the main reason for the wave of violent protests in Indonesia.

The protests erupted in late August 2025 as the Indonesian parliament attempted to pass a bill to significantly raise parliamentary salaries, benefits and pensions (such as raising monthly salaries from about $30 million to higher levels), while involving other controversial reforms, such as amendments to the electoral law.

This has been seen as a disregard for economic inequality, which has sparked strong dissatisfaction among several groups, especially as Indonesia faces inflation and unemployment.

But what really set off the situation was the suspected fatal accident caused by the Indonesian police: reports that an armoured police vehicle killed a takeaway/courier during the protests triggered public anger and quickly intensified the protests, which in turn led to larger anger and riots. The Indonesian government later promised to investigate the accident seriously.

From Jakarta, the protests quickly spread to Sumatra, Java and other places, and turned into violent conflicts, including burning vehicles and confrontation with the police, resulting in at least a few deaths and hundreds of injuries.

As the newly appointed president, prabowo is facing great pressure and needs to personally deal with the crisis to avoid further deterioration of the situation.

Former Indonesian officials and public opinion called on him to prioritize domestic affairs and avoid visiting during sensitive periods. If the Indonesian president does not cancel his plan to visit China, he may be accused by opponents of "ignoring people's suffering" and further intensifying protests.

The protest was large and was called by the media the largest and most violent social unrest during Prabowo's tenure. It has had a direct impact on Indonesia's domestic security, economy and diplomatic itinerary, including cancellations of international visits and temporary strengthening of social media supervision.

In addition to canceling the visit to China, the Indonesian government is also worried that the spread of misinformation on social platforms will further intensify the conflict, and requires social media platforms to close the live broadcast function in Indonesia.
